Socks or Barefoot in Yoga?

When you walk into a yoga class, you’ll usually see most people practicing barefoot - but that doesn’t mean it’s the only right way. Choosing between socks and bare feet in yoga really comes down to comfort, safety, and the type of practice you enjoy.

Going Barefoot:
Practicing without socks gives you a natural grip on the mat, which helps with balance and stability in poses like Warrior II, Downward Dog, or Tree Pose. Bare feet also allow your toes to spread and engage the small muscles that support alignment. For many, it creates a grounded, connected feeling that’s central to yoga.

Wearing Socks:
Socks can be a great option if you prefer extra warmth, want more coverage, or simply feel more comfortable that way. Grip socks are especially helpful - they keep your feet from slipping while still letting you move comfortably through your flow. They’re also a practical choice in studio settings if hygiene is a concern.

The Bottom Line:
There’s no “correct” choice - just what supports your practice. If you feel stable and comfortable, you’re doing it right. Try both and listen to your body. Your mat, your rules.

Me, Personally:
Only when it is really cold outside will I wear socks for yoga, but only socks with grips on the bottom, because regular socks are too slippery for me. I have the Hromec grip socks that are at the Amazon link below. I also got some for my mom. These work for men and women.
