A yoga block is a simple rectangular prop - usually made of foam, cork, or sometimes wood - designed to make yoga poses more accessible, stable, and comfortable for all bodies. It helps bring the floor closer to you, supports your balance, and allows you to move safely with better alignment.

WHY PEOPLE USE YOGA BLOCKS:

  • Support & Stability - Helps you balance in standing poses and reduces strain.

  • Accessibility - Makes poses easier if you have tight hamstrings, hips, or shoulders.

  • Alignment - Encourages safer, more effective posture in many poses.

  • Deeper Stretching - Allows you to explore poses more comfortably and gradually.

  • Injury Prevention - Reduces overreaching and compensating.

COMMON WAYS TO USE A YOGA BLOCK:

  • Under your hand in Triangle Pose to avoid collapsing into the side body.

  • Under your hips in seated poses to lift the hips and lengthen the spine (I personally do this with long seated poses/meditations o help ease lower back pain).

  • Between your thighs to activate inner-leg engagement.

  • Under your back or shoulders for gentle supported backbends.

FOAM vs WOOD vs CORK:

  • Foam - Light, soft, great for beginners and restorative work. Foam comes in different firmness levels as well (I like GAIAM for a softer block, CALIA for a firmer block - I get the CALIA blocks from DICK's).

  • Cork - Very firm, grippier, more stable for standing poses (I like GAIAM).

  • Wood - Very sturdy but heavier and less common today. I don't use wood yoga blocks, but I know people who do because you can make them yourself, custom sized just for you.
